04-25-2019 Temple Emanuel of Beverly HillsWriters Bloc presents "Dear Therapist" columnist Lori Gottlieb
What happens when your therapist is falling apart too? The Atlantic's "Dear Therapist" takes us with her into her process of finding emotional strength.Your therapist is listening to you, but what if she’s falling apart at the same time?
Perhaps you see a therapist, and discuss the core issues in your life, such as your partner, your job, your children, your self-esteem, you name it. Perhaps you feel as if your life is coming undone at the seams, or you can’t seem to make the right decisions. Perhaps you have so many unanswered questions, and you feel like you’re falling apart.
Best-selling author Lori Gottlieb (Stick Figure; Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough) is a therapist and the creator of the Dear Therapist advice column for The Atlantic. Like many therapists, she sees one herself. In her new book, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, Lori takes us into her life, as she herself falls apart. We meet Boyfriend who coldly dumps her, we meet her funny kid, we meet relatable and fascinating patients, and we see troubling physical issues crop up as her anxiety mounts. Lori takes us with her as she goes through the difficult- and often really funny- process of trying to find the emotional steadiness and freedom Lori seeks. It’s funny, deeply revealing and moving.

04-30-2019 Temple Emanuel of Beverly HillsWriters Bloc presents The New Yorker's Comma Queen, Mary Norris
The New Yorker's Comma Queen, Mary Norris, tells Patt Morrison why the Greeks created the best stories ever told.If you loved Mary Norris’ delightful tutorials on grammar and usage on The New Yorker’s website, then you surely loved her first book, Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen. In her new book, Greek to Me: Adventures of the Comma Queen, Her Majesty explains how her love for all things Greek influenced her, fed her soul and intellect. Her stories about her linguistic travails, whether struggling to learn the language or arguing for The New Yorker to pay for her classes, move from funny to frankly heroic, as are her stories about traveling to a Mediterranean country as a single woman alone. Funny and heroic. Mary Norris reminds us that Greek myths are the best stories ever told– in addition to her adventures in language and at The New Yorker, perhaps.
Patt Morrison is the most elegant grammar nerd around. She knows a great deal about almost everything. Her weekly column for the LA Times has evolved into a popular podcast called Patt Morrison Asks. She is the author, most recently, of Stop the Presses!: Truth, Justice, and the American Newspaper, an exploration of the American newspaper business as it has told the story of our nation’s history, culture, crises and social change.
